The
sky was bright, sunny, and at its peerless blue. The tender motion
of tall spinach-green pine trees on the left edge of my view indicated
a gentle breeze. It all seemed to be a perfect weather for picnic
or hiking, only to realise that I was neither going for both but
on a secret ope-ration that few could comprehend. Here sitting
in the cockpit of a 100-ton giant robot with guns known as BattleMechs,
I took my eyes from the scenery to shift my attention on the sensory
equipments. No sign |
Of any
hostile units. Strange, I thought to myself. I had seen two dots
on my radar screen at 850 feet northeast just a minute ago. These
dots would definitely be the enemy BattleMechs that I was supposed
to deal with. Just when I was about to turn my direction to an
unusual large pine tree when the two dots suddenly appeared on
my radar at just 300 feet in front of me! Within moments, I was
rocked by a hail of hard-hitting shells that could only be autocannons.
There, two enemy |
Hellhounds
appeared from the midst of trees eager to skin me alive. In an
instant, I raised my twin Gauss rifles and returned fire to the
one that shot me. The battle was on!
Welcome to the world of Battletech Universe. This webpage details
my favourite BattleMechs of each weight class that is based on
the popular Mechwarrior IV Vengeance and Mercenaries PC game titles.
The Mechs are Kodiak, Cauldron-Born, Hellhound and Cougar. |

KODIAK
This 100-ton BattleMech
that resembles a bear is a fast-moving assault machine that packs
a whallop. Designed by the Clan Ghost Bear, it is ferocious in medium
and short range combat, which embodies the clan's tradition in unrelenting
force and savage infighting.
Class : Assault
Technology : Clan
Tonnage : 100 tons
Top Speed : 88 kph
Electronic Components : ECM, LAMS, Jump Jets
Standard Weapons : 4 x Clan ER Medium Lasers
2
x Clan Streak Medium-Range Missile 40
1
x Clan LBX Autocannon 20
Armour Tonnage : 18 tons (540 points), Standard Internal
Structure Type
My Opinion :
My favourite Assault 'Mech had always been the Daishi for
its blazing firepower until I found out the Kodiak from the Clan Mech
Pack add-on. It has the two most useful electronic components; ECM
and Jump Jets, plus the LAMS offering decent defence against missiles.
When it comes to offence, it is powerful, though a little less than
the Daishi but among the 100-tonners,
it is the fastest and most maneuverable, and yet it can jump! Its
decent spacing for multitype weapons gives Kodiak greater versatility
and purpose, but the majority of the load is on its arms, indicating
a weakness should a smart opponent able to blast them off in combat.
Overall, the Kodiak is just like a wild bear, vicious, great strength,
and a huge beast with deadly claws. |

CAULDRON-BORN
Named for the unstoppable zombies
of ancient Irish myth, the Cauldron-Born is famous for taking high
amount of punishment and still remained combat-effective.
Class
: Heavy
Technology : Clan
Tonnage : 65 tons
Top Speed : 104 kph
Electronic Components : BAP, LAMS, Enchanced Optics
Standard Weapons : 2 x Clan ER Medium Lasers
2
x Clan Long-Range Missile 15
2
x Clan LBX Autocannon 10
Armour Tonnage : 12.5 tons (374 points), Standard
Internal Structure
My Opinion :
The same situation with my favourite Assault 'Mech. I had
been impressed with the Black Knight until I discovered the shorter
Cauldron-Born from the Clan Mech Pack add-on. With BAP, LAMS and Enhanced
Optics combo, it is an excellent choice for long-range combat. If
only it has ECM, then sniping can be added into the list of its combat
types of choice. Its speed can be a powerful weapon for its class,
and this is where I took the advantage and modified its arsenal to
mount two Clan LBX20s instead of 10s so it can charge towards the
enemy quickly and pound them, while still able to withstand some decent
damage. Fancy a speedy zombie? |

HELLHOUND
Designed by Clan Jade Falcon,
the Hellhound can practically outrun anything that it can't outgun.
This ability adds to its reputation as one of the most effective
medium-class BattleMechs in operation.
Class : Medium
Technology : Clan
Tonnage : 50 tons
Top Speed : 98 kph
Electronic Components : ECM, LAMS
Standard Weapons : 2 x Clan ER Large Lasers
1
x Clan Streak Short-Range Missile 6
1
x Clan LBX Autocannon 10
Armour Tonnage : 8.5 tons (255 points), Standard
Internal Structure
My Opinion :
Choosing my final choice of a medium-class BattleMech was
tough and it was a toss between the Hellhound and the Shadow Cat.
In the end I opted for the former due to its flexible multitype
weaponry, speed and maneuverability. With all these assets, I usually
go for hit-and-run tactics, catching enemies off-guard with some
decent punch and then quickly run for cover. Therefore, the type
of map is also important when playing a Hellhound.

COUGAR
It may not be the fastest but
it is the most powerful scout BattleMech in existence and outguns
its Inner Sphere counterparts.
Class : Light
Technology : Clan
Tonnage : 35 tons
Top Speed : 132 kph
Electronic Components : BAP, LAMS, Jump Jets, Enhanced
Optics
Standard Weapons : 2 x Clan Long-Range Missile 10
1
x Clan Small-Pulse Laser
1
x Clan ER Large Laser
Armour Tonnage : 7 tons (210 points), Endo Steel
Internal Structure
My Opinion :
The Cougar is my best choice for the speedy light 'Mechs
due to its versatility and firepower. With its enhanced optics and
BAP features, scouting work is much more favourable, and with jump
jets included to enable the Cougar to quickly hop over hills or trees
to escape from the bigger baddies. |
